Hope City’s Pop-Up Grill: More Than Just a Meal

“It all started with a hotdog…”

Back in 2020, amidst the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, an idea sparked in the heart of Pastor John Culbertson. In the close-knit Jacobsville community, home to Hope City, Pastor John felt a calling to make a difference. He prayed, and the answer was simple yet profound: “You can grill hotdogs.”

Thus began an extraordinary journey. Pastor John, teaming up with his friend, Pastor Ray Brown of The Gathering Church, launched the Pop-Up Grill. Every Friday, from 12 to 2 PM, the air in Jacobsville comes alive with the sizzle of hotdogs, the warmth of shared stories, and the comfort of community. “The first time we set up the grill, I didn’t know what to expect. But after meeting some of the people, praying with them and getting to know our neighbors, I knew this was something that could make a difference in our community” reflects Pastor John.

Starting with a modest crowd of 20-50, the Pop-Up Grill quickly became a beacon of hope. Dedicated volunteers, like Stephen and Kelly Walker, who moved to Evansville primarily to serve Jacobsville, stepped up to lead Pop-Up Grill every week, embodying the spirit of service.

By 2023, our Pop-Up Grill has become a cornerstone of the community. In summer, we’re serving 150-180 people every Friday; in winter, we bring the warmth indoors, catering to 60-90 grateful hearts.

But it’s not just about the food. We’ve seen miracles happen right here at the grill – jobs found, homes secured, addictions conquered, and countless lives touched and healed, both mentally and physically, through prayer. Stacy, shares, “my husband and I are 167 days sober, both working… so many people helped us when we were broken and could not help ourselves. Thank you for the hamburgers. We remember you feeding us when we had no food.”

Hope City’s Pop-Up Grill is more than just a place to eat; it’s where physical nourishment meets spiritual fulfillment. It’s a testament to unceasing love and care – a reflection of God’s love and our commitment to our community. It’s shown Jacobsville that Hope City is more than a church; we’re a pillar of support, a beacon of hope.

This is our story, but it’s far from complete. We invite you to be a part of this journey. Join us at Hope City’s Pop-Up Grill. Share your story, lend a hand, or simply enjoy a hotdog and the company of friends. Together, let’s continue writing this beautiful story of community, hope, and love.
