2022 Your Year of Breakthrough – Like a Flood!

Written by Ron Yates

At the start of 2022, God changed the sermon series message for the year.  He spoke to our pastor and directed him to preach on “2022: Your Year of Breakthrough“.  Pastor John didn’t change the series just because he had a good sermon to preach…it was a declaration to Hope City that 2022 is your year of breakthrough!

So now, it’s time for you to make the same declaration over your life.  Get in agreement with what God has declared about you!

See, if you don’t get in agreement with it, you’re probably not going to see it.

It doesn’t matter what you feel, think or see…what matters is getting in agreement with what God says about you.  The breakthrough has already been made available.  God has broken through our enemy.  Look at what was prophesied about Jesus:

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.  I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. As for you, because of the blood of My covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you. ” – ZECHARIAH 9:9-12 (NIV)

Righteous and Victorious

He is righteous and VICTORIOUS.  Now WE have righteousness and victory.  God’s rule extends from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth.  Why is this scripture important to us?

Who is the prisoner of hope?  It’s one who remains hopeful in spite of circumstances that seem hopeless.

Our text for this series is 2 Samuel 5:19-20.  It’s about David going up against the Philistines and watching God break through them like a breakthrough of water.

“19 So David inquired of the Lord, saying, ‘Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?’ And the Lord said to David, ‘Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.’ 20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, ‘The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.’ Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.” – 2 SAMUEL 5:19-20

It was like a flood.

Don’t get me wrong…you will always encounter resistance when you do the will of God, but God tells us that He will DOUBTLESS deliver!  It’s a breakthrough like a flood!  Look at what Isaiah 59:19 says in the NIV:

“From the west, people will fear the name of the Lord, and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory. For He will come like a pent-up flood that the breath of the Lord drives along.” – ISAIAH 59:19 (NIV)

Let me illustrate this:  A pent-up flood is like a dam that suddenly gives way.  Back in 2019 in New Braunfels, Texas, Dunlap Dam collapsed.  Here’s the view of Dunlap Dam.  Before that moment, there was no visual indication that a breakthrough was going to occur, but it did!

You may be facing things in your life where you need to see breakthrough.  Remember, it doesn’t matter whether you see or feel the victory at the moment: God’s Word is true and He will doubtless deliver!  You may have absolutely no visual indication of this, but God promised deliverance and the breakthrough IS there!

Not only has God said He would deliver, but He tells us that He placed that breakthrough power IN US!  Hallelujah!

Like a Flood

In John 7:38-39, Jesus tells us that out of our innermost being will flow RIVERS OF LIVING WATER.  The flood is in you!  It may not look like a breakthrough is coming, but God has already set it in motion.

The wonderful thing about this is that not only does that mean what we have breakthrough in our lives, but we are the living water conduits of breakthrough for others!  God hasn’t just called us to be set free…He’s called us to realize what He has done for us so that we can help others see and accept the faithfulness of God in THEIR lives!

You may feel you’re in a parched place.  You may not see the river.  But Isaiah 43:19 tells us that God will make rivers in the desert!  We ARE that river!  We have the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead living in us!  It’s FOR us and THROUGH us!
